Café Artistique

Leeds, 14th October 2008

Proposal

For Café Artistique I propose to respond to the use of photographic imagery - ‘art photography’ - within publicity of the event. I intend to do this playfully as a means of exploring the role of photographic artwork outside of ‘the exhibition’ in a wider spectacle of photographic imagery. The project will situate my own position as an artist, photographer and image maker, alongside the way in which the event can exist outside of the real and through a legacy on the axis website.

Initially I intend to reconstruct ”Downfall, 2007” by Alex Hartley which is currently being used to publicise the upcoming event. I will do this by constructing a scale diorama from cardboard and re photographing it. In doing so I intend to re-imagine the decision making process in selecting this image (the work is currently on display as part of an exhibition at the Leeds Met Gallery) and examine how this work can be used to imagine the content of the Café Artistique event, suggesting how the currency of conceptual photographic work operates outside of its original context.

The proposal is a playful attempt at pre-empting the content of a discussion to be had in the future, and the role of photography and art photography within that. Furthermore the work is an attempt to examine the ways photographic artwork operates as tableaux; pre-empting a discussion on its own content, the inherent assumption made by the photographer in this process of production and the re imagining pictorial space provides the viewer.
